The Editors

We have native English editors and proofreaders, including PhDs, MAs, MScs and active researchers, working to make your English perfect. Their specialisms are wide-ranging and their experience varied. Meet a few of them:

After a PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of London, Joelle moved into science communication and administration.  She worked for 10 years for the UK Government’s Food Standards Agency, where (amongst other things) she developed and managed a world leading programme of scientific research on food allergy and immunology.  She has published scientific and technical papers in peer-reviewed journals, acted as a reviewer of draft manuscripts and research grant applications, and edited many manuscripts, technical reports, abstracts and other types of science based communication documents.  Since starting a family Joelle has become a freelance professional scientific writer, editor and proofreader, with particular interests in the food sciences, nutrition, general and preventive medicine, clinical research, biology and environmental sciences.  She is passionate about communicating clear, accurate, evidence based science.

With a multicultural and multilingual upbringing spanning Belgium, Spain, the US and the UK, I have always been passionate about languages and the written word. I am a law graduate of both University College London and the London School of Economics, and so I am well placed to edit and proofread legal content, which I have done both as a freelancer and for an international firm. I have experience in editing historical and geological texts, as well as proofreading copy for businesses. My interests include technology, music, philosophy and current affairs.

I have been a script editor and development executive in film and television for over fifteen years; editing, proofreading and developing hundreds of scripts, beat documents and long-form treatments for the BBC, ITV and Channel 5 in the UK. I have a BA in English from the University of London, am a freelance editor and spend more time reading than almost anything else.

A graduate in English Literature from Cambridge, I was a lecturer at Prague’s Charles University for four years. I have also taught English in countries as diverse as Ecuador, Greece and Saudi Arabia. I have been proofreading academic texts full-time for over three years. I have a real love of the language and have edited work from every possible discipline. I have recently written a novel set in the north of England.

I am a Literature and History PhD candidate at the University of Hull. I have a strong academic background and experience editing papers and dissertations within this context. I have always had a passion for the written word and enjoy reading popular and academic texts. I was awarded University of Washington’s Popular Fiction Certificate, and through this have experience editing novels and plays.

After a long and rewarding career as a head teacher and with a background in science, I have begun to edit commercial copy, novels and most recently a Ph.D. thesis about the German philosopher and botanist, Schleiden. I have always enjoyed teaching English as a second language.

Fiona holds a BSc in Agricultural Science, an MSc in Clinical Embryology and a PhD in aspects of veterinary reproduction. She has recently worked as a clinical embryologist and andrologist and during her research years became involved in aspects of conservation and human wildlife conflict in Africa, as her study species was the elephant. Fiona has authored, co-authored and published 15 scientific manuscripts.

I am a published author who has ten years’ experience proofreading and editing texts written by ESL authors. I studied English and philosophy prior to receiving my PhD in Composition. This helped me refine my writing skills, as did my musicological studies during my PhD work. I have undertaken formal studies in Latin, German, French, and Spanish. My published articles can be found in the journals Digital Creativity and Visual Studies.

I completed a BSc in Chemistry followed by a MSc in Analytical Chemistry, then started working in pharmaceutical companies as an analytical chemist. This background in pharmaceutical sciences and chemistry helped me to find a role working at an academic publisher, where I worked for over 5 years as a Commissioning Editor, launching and managing several high-impact journals pertaining to pharmaceutical sciences. My particular areas of interest are medicine, history, economics and finance.

I completed a B.Sc degree with majors in human physiology and genetics, followed by an M.Sc in biotechnology. I published my research in a peer-reviewed journal during which I managed the editorial process. I specialise in the biological sciences and have four years’ experience editing academic and commercial ESL documents. My skillset includes not only academic editing, but also copy editing and content engineering for a wide array of communication platforms.

I am bilingual in English and Portuguese and I hold a degree in Modern Languages from Leeds University. I am qualified and experienced as a translator into English and as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language, with additional qualifications in Finance and advanced English. My editing and proofreading experience ranges from examinations to marketing materials and my specialist fields are business, finance, data analysis, education and tourism.

I have a PH.D. in English from the University of Chicago.  I live in the written word, with many years of experience editing texts in literature and linguistics, as well as in many other fields, such as anthropology, economics, history, medicine, philosophy, psychology, and sociology.  I aim to satisfy every client.

Growing up in a Grade II-listed Jacobean manor house (okay; the lodge, my parents the on-site caretakers) I was immersed in history and stories, dreaming I’d one day edit books, romances and historical novels, which would be like getting paid to read. I eventually did, arriving at editing fiction via TEFL, working for a European medical association, proofreading and editing for three medical speciality journals, then examining for a Magic Circle law firm. So yes, these days I’m more likely to be found proofreading academic and legal English than I am running down oak-panelled long galleries, tapping for secret doorways.

Emma has a BA in French and Italian, and speaks Spanish too. She also has an MA in Translation and Professional Language Skills, which involved editing and proofreading as well as translating. Emma edited and proofread financial texts for an operational risk company for over three years and then worked at UEFA as an editor and translator, working on documents including magazine articles, letters, manuals and press releases. Thanks to her studies and experience, she specialises in editing texts written by non-native English speakers.

My name is Paul. My background is in academia and educational publishing. I have extensive experience as a university lecturer, copyeditor and writer. My goal in every task I undertake is to provide excellence for the customer.

I am a music technology graduate of Kings College London. I am an arts and music critic and edit and proofread for charities, event companies and online media.

I am a qualified editor, with two years’ experience editing the work of ESL writers. I specialise in the healthcare and energy industries having published reports for business intelligence. I have a good knowledge of geology and biochemistry, as well as the technical vocabulary of business and economics. My other speciality is 19th and early 20th century literature, and my qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in English literature.

I am a recent graduate of Lancaster University where I studied English Literature. In my time there I wrote features and reviews for the university newspaper. I am a keen reader and writer and passionately love the written word.

A graduate in Literature and Film from the University of Warwick, I have been proofreading professionally for over three years, mainly for ESL authors. Fiction is my forte (both editing and writing), along with any text relating to law, history, sociology, or any humanities subject. Satisfied clients range from the commercial: branded copy, ad campaigns, and company blogs – to the technical: independent academics, law firms, and even EU committees. I strive to present the voice and the sense of every author’s work to its best possible advantage.
